Welcome!  This is the Website for the Department of Biology at the University of Central Oklahoma.  The Department offers BS degree options for the following: Bachelor of Science in Biology, The Bachelor of  Science in Education; Biology Option, or General Science Option, and the Bachelor of Science in Clinical Laboratory Science.  The department offers a core of courses designed to provide students with a common breadth and depth of information.  Additionally, 23-24 hours of electives may be chosen from a large variety of available courses.  This allows students to tailor their specific academic programs toward their future goals.  Prerequisite courses in all the medical professions may be completed at UCO.  Prerequisite course work usually requires 3-4 years.  A student may then apply for admission into a professional school in one of the following areas:

             Allopathic Medicine                 Osteopathic Medicine

             Veterinary Medicine                Chiropractic

            Dentistry                                  Optometry

             Podiatry                                  Physician Assistant

             Pharmacy                                Occupational Therapy

             Physical Therapy

Students may also take prerequisite courses for other "allied health" professions such as : Dental Hygiene, Radiological Technology, and Nursing.  Nursing career information can be obtained from the UCO Department of Nursing.

The Department also offers a MS Degree in Biology.  The program has two options, the thesis or the non-thesis.  The thesis option provides training through original laboratory and/or field research.  The non-thesis option requires a literature research paper.  In both options the Master's students gain experience in the design and reporting of scientific information.

There are sixteen Full-time faculty members as well as experienced adjuncts who provide excellent instruction and promote student potential to the fullest.

As you view the Department of Biology Web pages, you will become more familiar with the Department, it's faculty, programs, and student organizations, the Biology Club(Tri-Beta), and the Pre-med/Health Professions Club.  You may contact the Department at jhellack@uco.edu if you wish additional information.
